I’m lovin’ me some Monique Pressley. She is killin’ the game right now! Her stringent defense of my childhood hero, Bill Cosby, is nothing less than spectacular. Ms. Pressley is the lead counsel on Bill Cosby’s defense team. I first caught wind of her on television interviews by various news outlets.
Time and time again, she gets on these news programs and straight owns the news anchors. They ask her tough questions. And with a smile…and diction that is as cool and calm as the waters on the lake after Jesus said “Peace, be still”…she systematically dismantles every argument, notion, perception, and rumor that’s contrary to her client’s innocence. No one can touch her!
Don’t get me wrong. I’m not advocating whether Bill Cosby did what he’s accused of. So let’s not get distracted. What I am impressed with is Monique Pressley! Not just for how she handles the press, but for how she got the job as lead counsel. As the principal of her own law practice, Ms. Pressley, 46, mother of two, ordained minister, radio show host, and motivational speaker, began speaking out on television and radio shows about the public accusations against Cosby. For Ms. Pressley, it wasn’t a matter of if he did it or not. It was always about the legal issue. And she has a darn good argument.
“I believe that our justice system works the way it’s supposed to work for a reason. I believe in due process. I believe people are innocent until they are proven guilty. And if you can’t prove them guilty in a court through prosecution, then you don’t get the option of persecution instead. 10…20…30…40 years later, people don’t get to decide to come forward when there’s no opportunity for an alleged victim to prove what has happened, or for Mr. Cosby to offer a defense for a criminal prosecution. And that’s what’s been lost in the public discussion.” Monique Pressley, HuffPost Live July 31, 2015
She spoke boldly about what she believed was right. Public opinion be damned. She carried it like, “I’m right. And everyone else is wrong.” Then she…in an articulate, calculating, and systematic way…attempted to prove it to anybody who challenged her. A supporter of Mr. Cosby and members of his legal team noticed her sharing publicly what they had been sharing privately in-house. So they reached out to her and asked her to join Mr. Cosby’s legal team. And the rest is history.
How can you not admire that? Her story is so encouraging to me. As a Christian husband who authored a book and blog about male leadership in relationships…in a culture where that reality is scarce and its theological-base is deemed archaic, I too believe I’m right. So I boldly speak what I believe and proudly defend it with my marriage as an example…and my life’s work of helping other marriages through our Relationship Bootcamps. Public opinion be damned.
What is your Mr. Cosby? Do you have an unwavering belief about something that you’re willing to speak boldly about and defend…even if public opinion is totally against you? Does your life reflect that belief? For leaders like Monique Pressley…it does. Or does your belief sway with the public opinion of your emotions and circumstances?
