Jada Pinkett-Smith is on some ole…Public Enemy – Fight the Power…type-a stuff.
In response to what some are now saying is the Academy’s continual snub of Oscar nominations of black actors, directors, and movies starring black actors in leading roles, Jada took to social media and published a 2 ½ minute soft-spoken, yet Sista-Soulja-esque, canon-over-the-bow shot at the Academy. She raised the question, have people of color amassed enough power and influence that we no longer have to beg for love, acknowledgment, or respect from other people? But, by loving, acknowledging, and respecting ourselves…that is the place of true power. She ended her commentary by saying,
“Begging for acknowledgement…or even asking, diminishes dignity. And diminishes power.”
We must stand in our power.

When I heard that powerful statement, I couldn’t help but think about the people I’ve worked with over the last 16 years who are in relationships and begging for their mate to love, acknowledge, and respect them. They don’t feel like they’re getting from their mate what should be basic human needs?
Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs identifies love, acknowledgment, and respect as basic human needs everyone strives to achieve. But when you’re in a relationship…and you’re not getting them from your mate, that’s when people’s behavior turns tricky! Some fight for it. Some demand it. Some manipulate for it. Some even leave the relationship because of its absence. But begging for it???
I must agree with Jada. Don’t beg for it. When you resort to begging for basic needs, you secede your power to that person from whom you seek it…as if they hold the power to determine your happiness. This abdication diminishes your dignity.

Don’t diminish your dignity by letting someone else determine whether you feel love, acknowledgement, and respect. Find your validation in who and what God says about you and the grace he’s given you to carry-out your purpose
