Reading the article above, I was captivated by Marc’s raw…unpolished…edgy take on creating a personal brand. He challenges you to unlabel yourself from labels people put on you…create for you…and assume you fit into. And actively and passionately develop your own authentic personal brand that broadcasts to the world your uniqueness.
But That Got Me Thinking…
What kind of labels do people have of us as a man? Woman? A husband or wife? A mother or father? Who…by their perceived expectations…has defined me; and in so doing has defined my behavior?
Thinking about that last question kind of pisses me off. Because that question is about control! It’s about someone else’s expectations controlling what you do or don’t do.
See…I’ve been in a relationship where I allowed someone’s expectations of me to control what I did and didn’t do. I stayed in it too long. But I don’t regret it. I learned from it. I learned what it feels like being controlled. And I learned what I will never do again.
After I got out of it, I vowed to myself never to get back in another controlling relationship…of any kinda…ever again: not work, not church, not volunteerism, not nothing! Never!
That is why the idea of creating an authentic personal brand is so appealing to me. Because I am empowered to express myself in a way that best represents who I am…not a label some else placed on me.
What’s Your Authentic Personal Brand?
As a man? A woman? Husband or Wife? Mother or Father? A Leader? What is your personal brand? What differentiates you from the rest of the world? This is an empowering question.
My friend…who are you? Who has God made you to be? You have the authority and autonomy to express who that person is…and in any way you deem appropriate.
But you have to know who that person is first. So discover your authentic personal brand! Then tell the world who you are!
