Serious question: What do voodoo dolls, straight pins, and loud noises have to do with creating a happy marriage? Before you click away, let me assure you that the answer to this question will likely solve some communication problems you’re having…or will have…in your relationship.

107 married couples were given voodoo dolls with 51 pins. Their instructions were…at the end of each day, secretly stick pins in your voodoo doll…indicating how angry you were at your spouse.

They also were given instructions to test their glucose levels before breakfast and bed each day.

As it turned out, the ones with lower glucose levels stuck more pins in their voodoo dolls. University of Ohio research lead, Brad Bushman, explained, “When they had lower blood glucose levels, they felt angrier and took it out on the dolls representing their spouse. Even those who reported they had good relationships with their spouses were more likely to express anger if their blood glucose levels were lower.”

But it gets worse. They also found links between low glucose levels, aggressive impulses, and aggressive behavior.

A subsequent experiment showed that when given the choice of how loud and how long to make their spouse listen to a blast of noise in their headphones, individuals with lower blood sugar levels made their spouse endure louder and longer noises.

As they explain, glucose is fuel for the brain. It provides energy we need to exercise self-control, handle anger, and control aggressive impulses.

(So that explains why I be gettin’ straight-up ig-nant when I haven’t eaten in a while. Sorry babe!)

So be aware…if your glucose level is low, you’re more likely to be a mean angry pain in the butt. And if your spouse’s glucose level is low, (in the words of Louis Jordan), “Beware…brother…beware!”

But fret not! These scientists offer a simple solution. Before you have a serious conversation with your spouse, make sure neither of you are hungry.

Now those are words every couple should live by…or should I say…eat by.
